The Minnesota Noices

September 2025

It seems as though a monthly post is more my speed lately. At the beginning of the month the eldest and I went to Minnesota to clean out the basement at Highland Hideaway, celebrate the birthdays of my mom and younger brother, and to catch up with friends. Eldest had not been to MN for 3 years *gasp* so it was high time for her to see friends and reconnect.

We started full speed at the Great Minnesota Get Together/ state fair.

Congratulations to the new Dairy Princess!

For mom’s 79 th birthday she chose the Coffee Cup, the cafe across the street from my brother’s place in St Paul. We went early to get a table for a big group but so early that my nieces, needing the time to catch up on sleep after a big first week of school, couldn’t join us. Matt and Allison’s oldest drove up from Rochester and it was great catching up with him.

We did lots of fun outings with friends, though forgot to document most of it. Missed out on taking photos of our Hamilton date with Sophia. We reminisced about listening to the sound track on road trips and how the girls did Hamilton musical theatre camp together one year, but no photos from watching the movie together at Riverview. We even celebrated with Tater tot hotdish for dinner after.

A few highlights…

A few Cobber friends gathered at Highland Hideaway. More dropped by during the week as they were able. It was a nice mix of chatting one-on-one and enjoying the group hang.

I “finished” Wordle after playing the same word nearly every day for 5 years. LEAST was my BEST guess, hahaha, get it?!

We worked on getting all those boxes cleared out of the basement storage room and made some good progress. Also painted the bright purple front door that never suited me or worked well with the house imo.

Highland Bakery and Cafe open at 7 am with fresh baked goods ready to “roll”!

Just prior to our trip I attended my first wedding in Sweden! It was a lovely little ceremony at a park in Malmö. The day was chilly and it threatened to rain but turned out quite nice. It was beautiful, and the musicians, photography, flowers and toasting reception went as planned, without wind or rain to mess things up; an amazing feat for an outdoor wedding in Sweden.

Spent a nice morning in Malmö competing against ourselves at Teamtastic, doing a variety of games. We scored higher than average despite failing completely at the horse race challenge- oops. We were especially good at music and movies! Then back to Lund for Kulturnatten, a big day and night with organized concerts, galleries, open museums and any aspect related to culture offering free events, lectures, guided tours, open house and the like. It’s a kind of festival day that takes place all over Lunds Kommun.

I neglected to sign up in advance for the popular stuff but there were still plenty of things to do. I met up with Stephanie and her Spanish compañeras, and we walked around town checking out open houses and enjoying the festive atmosphere. Unfortunately I ran out of energy before the main event which for me was a performance by Kaliffa, a Sweden-famous entertainer, recording artist. I’ve been trying to learn his most famous song, Helt Seriöst, which is a fun, catchy song and good for learning Swedish (och Tippa på tå till exempel) But I missed it!

Bry took the opportunity to make use of a friends extra ticket to Oktoberfest in Copenhagen, where they met up with a German colleague. It was a fun time and a new cultural experience, and he was a little amazed at how many liters of beer can so quickly turn into lederhosen’d middle age men standing precariously on long benches!
